Differences in DIN – EN – ISO Standardization – Get an Overview!

Find information here about the changes made to specific product standards and the resulting differences between DIN, EN, and ISO standardizations. Get a clear overview and take advantage of the easy-to-understand comparison between withdrawn DIN standards and the current EN and ISO standards.

In the past, standardization work within Germany was carried out at the national level by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN). In addition, there are EN standards at the European level and ISO standards at the international level, issued by the International Organization for Standardization.

The differences:

DIN

National standards (DIN) are largely being replaced by international and European standards. DIN standards will continue to exist only for products that do not have ISO or EN standards.

EN

European standards (EN) aim to harmonize technical regulations and laws within the European Single Market, which has been in effect since January 1, 1993. In principle, existing ISO standards should be adopted as EN standards without modification whenever possible.

The key difference between ISO and EN standards is that EN standards, once adopted by the European Council, must be implemented immediately and without alteration as national standards in all member states — and the corresponding national standards must be withdrawn at the same time.

ISO

International standards (ISO) are intended, according to the mission and objectives of ISO, which was founded in 1946, to promote the global harmonization of technical regulations, thereby facilitating the exchange of goods and reducing trade barriers.
